After waking up in a high security medical facility with no recollection of how he got there, John Vattic's memory slowly returns through a series of playable flashbacks to his days as a civilian advisor to a military operation in Siberia. In these past levels, he works with a group of soldiers known as WinterICE, attempting to locate an elderly scientist who's been conducting research into psychic powers. In the present, John attempts to piece together what he remembers and locate members of WinterICE in the hope that he can clear his name, work out what actually happened... and discover quite how he came to have psychic powers himself.

During the course of the game the player gets to use telekinesis, healing, charm, projection and possession powers and two types of psychic attack, plus a variety of weapons. Third person action adventure in which most situations can be tackled with stealth, mindless violence or psychic shenanigans, or a combination of the three. Is the player really the deranged psycho killer the doctors at the medical facility claim he is? Unravel the twisting dual-timeline plot and find out.

Kane & Lynch may have one of the most unfortunate titles in the history of games. Although the name may inspire thoughts of racial injustice, IO Interactive's spiritual successor to Freedom Fighters and follow up to Hitman: Blood Money has nothing to do with race relations. Even so, it will manage to raise an eyebrow or two with its visceral story and characters that almost save the title from its clunky gameplay. The game actually gets its title from the two stars of the game, Kane and Lynch. These are not your ordinary heroes. In fact, the game begins with the duo en route to death row. A mysterious paramilitary outfit that calls itself The7 breaks the two out. Kane, it seems, is a former member of the group and has a lot of money that they feel owed. Lynch, a medicated psychopath, is recruited to keep an eye on Kane while he gets The7 what they want. From there, the plot follows a series of twists, turns and betrayals with a whole lot of killing along the way.

The best thing Kane & Lynch has going for it is that it's a game that pulls no punches. It seems that the majority of high profile games out there today have some form of violence or at least one feature that could be called morally suspect, but few reach the levels of this title. Kane & Lynch ratchets everything up a notch to the point where you should feel uncomfortable playing this game around a young, impressionable mind. It begins with killing cops and moves straight on to curse words flying from the mouths of the various characters at unheard of rates. If you like four letter words beginning with the letter "F," then the dialogue will be right up your alley.

Foul language alone wouldn't be enough to make Kane & Lynch stand out from the myriad other titles looking to gain some notoriety. This is where Kane & Lynch earns its stripes. Rather than employing a series of cheap shock tactics as so many other games have, IO Interactive crafted an intense and visceral story to go along with the game. Say what you will about the language being over the top, but these anti-heroes are wonderfully bent. It's no easy task to create such despicable characters and then give them motivations and situations that allow even the holiest of us to relate to their situation and feel for them. These are hard men put in an impossible situation. Following them on their journey is a wild and bumpy ride.

Helping to make the story and characters even more powerful is the great way they're presented. Traditional cutscenes and voiceovers are used in between gameplay, but the story and character development doesn't ever end. Kane and Lynch continue to interact, argue and reveal more of the plot straight through the action. This does a great service towards making the entire experience feel fluid and cinematic.

The player is tasked with developing a series of space stations according to the wishes of various employers. The game is set after an apocalyptic galactic war, and many of the stations are in a state of considerable disrepair. It is hinted that these space stations are essentially the last few space-based environments available to the denizens of Startopia, as most of them had been destroyed during the war.

The player has no direct control over the aliens that wander about the station. Instead, it is the player's job to construct rooms and hire aliens to staff them. The rooms provide basic necessities as well as recreation, encouraging visitors to remain on the station and continue spending money. Each type of alien is suited to a particular kind of task, and individual aliens have a set of statistics that determine their value as an employee. The actual goal for the player varies from one scenario to the next; in some scenarios, the player is expected to meet an economic goal, while in other scenarios the player is required to perform a specific task such as converting a certain number of aliens, or taking over the entire station by force.

Thankfully, Ubisoft and Eagle Dynamics give the community more credit than some other developers have. The creators of the Flanker series have managed to create a sim that combines the breadth of Jane's USAF with the intense accuracy of Falcon and that's a rare accomplishment in the genre. The game has stepped away from the purely dynamic mission generation that was initially promised, but the alternatives as presented in the final version are still quite compelling.

The conflict at the heart of Lock On takes place above and around the Black Sea. Based on precise satellite data, the maps here are fantastically detailed and offer a reasonable variety of geography. The fictional conflict allows

players to take to the skies in eight separate planes. You can fly fast and low in the A-10s and SU-25s, leap off the deck in your SU-33, or try your ass in the office of the sleek F-15 or SU-27. There are also three separate versions of the MiG 29 to play with.

A range of play options are available right at the start, from the instant action missions to the massively comprehensive mission editor. When you get in the air, you'll find that the challenge level is quite high. (You can scale the difficulty by enabling unlimited ammo, fuel and limiting crashes.) Even with the aids on, you'll find that the enemy offers a serious challenge having a good understanding of energy management and radar profiles.

As you might guess by now, this is not an arcade style simulation and you'll need to have a serious understanding of how the systems of each aircraft perform in real life if you're to have any hope of using them correctly in the game. And there's a broad range of systems to understand here -- from the A-10's close-in ground attack weapons to the long-distance dedications of the MiGs. The flight models in Lock On also reveal a tremendous difference in performance based on the plane you choose. The A-10, certainly a plane that sim-heads have a great affection for, feels much more straightforward than the MiGs for instance.

Thankfully there are a number of tutorials you can take on to learn the ins and outs of the aircraft. Each plane has its own tutorial section that covers the specific abilities of that plane. In this sense, Lock On really rewards the time you invest in it more so than a lot of other sims. You'll also need to pay attention to the different cockpit layouts for each of the planes. Those of you who are familiar with Russian acronyms will have an easier time reading the Russian labels on the displays. In keeping with the sterile presentation of the rest of the game shell, there are no voice overs in the cockpit and you'll be forced to read each tutorial tip as it appears on the screen.

And there's a lot to learn here. The radar model alone is quite comprehensive and will take some getting used to on the part of new pilots. (There is a dumbed-down version of the radar that simplifies many of the issues found in the real-world equivalents.) Things like doppler effects and terrain masking are modeled in the game so you'll need to act smartly as well as quickly to take advantage of every feature of this system. The upside to all this realism is that you'll feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment once you figure out what the hell you're doing. But it does take a while even for sim fans to wrap their brain around all the different planes here, particularly when moving from the ground-oriented planes to the air-to-air ones.
